FEBRUARY
Be patient
Whilst the ground remains still workable at present it is very unlikely that the ground will remain warm enough to plant at this time of year, especially since the really cold spell is surely just round the corner. The temptation is to start to sow carrots etc but I have found it rarely works. At best germination is very slow and often the cold and wet conditions rot the seed and you get precious little to show for your efforts. Frustration is often the only outcome !
Sweet Peas
If you fancy growing these then now is the time to start your seeds off. Sweet peas enjoy a deep root run so they are best started individually in root trainers or plant several seeds in deep pots. They are not difficult to separate out when you plant them. Sweet peas are hardy annuals, there is a perennial strain but they lack any of the wonderful scent the annuals are famous for. As annuals they can be sown directly into the soil.
Potatoes
Reminder : have you got your seed potatoes purchased and chitting yet?
