NOVEMBER
Bare rooted fruit bushes will probably be available in the garden centres shortly.
Remember that fruit bushes will be in the ground for a good many years and the only really easy and effective way of ensuring strong growth and heavy fruit crops is to prepare the ground well before planting. Incorporate plenty of manure into the planting hole and top dress round the plants in the spring. Blackcurrants respond well to 40 grams of sulphate of ammonia per square metre while red and white currants like sulphate of potash at the same dosage. Plant distances are important. Black and red currants ideally need to be planted at 5 feet intervals; with 5 feet between rows. Gooseberries, you can reduce to 4 feet and raspberries need to be in rows at 1 foot intervals and 2 to 3 feet between rows.
The communal greenhouse can be put to good use drying out dahlia roots and geraniums.
The water supply to the mains tanks will be turned off during this month and parking on the grass will be prevented by a rope and post barrier.
